In 1994, Lafayette County had a gross product from all sectors of $858,600,000. Agricultural
sectors contributed $97,900,000 or 11 percent of the gross county product (Devino, 1996).
Average net farm income varies because of changes in commodity prices and yield fluctuations
due to weather. Retail trade has increased by over 450 percent from 1988 to 1994 due to
expansion of the Kansas City metropolitan area.
