MINERAL RESOURCES

The watershed is located within the Lexington coal resource region. Coal mining operations were conducted in this region between the mid-1800s and the early 1960s (Robertson, 1971). Coal mining activities consisted primarily of small drifts supplying a local trade. These abandoned mine areas were inventoried by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources in 1980. DNR concluded that tailings piles were not causing problems and that spoil materials are non-acidic in nature (Bishop, 1996).
