Future Program Needs for the Indian Lake Watershed Project
Introduction
The Indian Lake Watershed Project has experienced success at promoting and implementing programs
which have improved the overall conditions of the watershed and of Indian Lake. These programs
have reduced the amount of sediment entering Indian Lake each year. The project is now in a
transition period. The timing is right for developing a long-range plan to help determine
which areas the project needs to look for future work.
The following pages include the program needs arising from the public data-gathering efforts
conducted in the fall of 1995. The Joint Board and cooperating agencies encourage more public
support of the project and more public responsibility for the improvements of the watershed.
The project has concentrated mainly on agricultural practices, but now would like to involve
the urban and residential population in the project progress. One way to do this is to design
programs which require the public to take action. The action needs listed have been prioritized
from the highest priority at the top to the lower priority needs towards the bottom. This does
not imply one is more important than the others, it's merely how the needs were ranked by the
public and the project team. There are six topic areas covered under the future needs.
Education and public relation needs is first because it received the most attention and was the
most mentioned concern or idea. The agricultural needs, sewer needs, lake needs and habitat
needs are also ranked in this manner. The topic of watershed operation needs are a combination
of public input and project team input.
