Current Monitoring

Fecal Coliform Sampling
Fecal Coliform samples are taken once a month at all three Indian Lake State Park swimming beaches between May and August. This sampling is a State of Ohio Health Department requirement. Samples are pulled by a state park employee and shipped to Brookside Laboratories in New Knoxville, Ohio. If all three samples total greater than 600 total cfu's (cfu's - Colony Forming Units) of coliform the areas must be retested. If a retest fails, then further, more extensive sampling is conducted. The source of the contamination is investigated, determined and eliminated.

Results
These samples have been taken since 1970. Since the start of the watershed project in 1990, the samples have been under the 600 cfu limit except where storm events and contaminated bottles have affected the results. Upon retest the results were below the limit. The Indian Lake State Park beaches are well within the State allowable fecal coliform limits for swimming water. Test results on the fecal coliform sampling are kept at the Indian Lake State Park Manager's Office.
